For the 49th Super Bowl this Sunday, defending Super Bowl Champions, Seattle Seahawks, will face the New England Patriots at the University of Phoenix Stadium, in Glendale Arizona.
The Patriots will be representing the American Football Conference (AFC) after beating the Indianapolis Colts (45-7) on January 17th, 2015. While the Seahawks will be representing the National Football Conference (NFC) after defeating the Green Bay Packers in overtime. (28-22).
Quarterback Russell Wilson of the Seahawks has been playing in the National Football League (NFL) for three years now. In the regular season, Wilson completed 3,475 yards and 20 touchdowns.
However, Quarterback Tom Brady of the Patriots has been playing in the NFL for 15 years. Brady had 4,109 yards completed this season along with 33 touchdowns. He has also led the Patriots for three Super Bowl wins back in 2001, 2003, and 2004.
The Seahawks and Patriots had a regular and post-season record of 14-4, were the first of their division, had a home record of 9-1 and away record of 5-3.
The two teams have a similar average of yards per game – the Patriots averaged 365.5, and the Seahawks averaged 375.8. Patriots averaged more passing yards, but the Seahawks averaged more rushing yards.
Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch had 1,306 yards of the regular season and averaged 4.7 yards per carry. Patriots running back Jonas Gray had a regular season of 412 yards and averaged 4.6 yards per carry. Lynch also completed 13 touchdowns, while Gray only had five touchdowns.
Though the Seahawks may have the passing yards advantage. Patriot’s wide receiver Rob Gronkowski completed the season with 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns, and Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin 825 yards and three touchdowns for the season.
On the defensive side, the Seahawks only allowed opponent teams on average 267.1 on average, while the Patriots allowed 344.1 yards on average. The Seahawks also beat them in points per game, with only 15.9 points and the Patriots allowing 19.6 points. The Seahawks was number one in the NFL for defense for the regular season.
Coached by Pete Carroll, the Seahawks, if they win, will become the eighth team in league history to win the Superbowl back to back. Consequently, if coach Bill Belichick from the Patriots wins, he will be the second coach to win four Super Bowls in NFL history. While Brady may be the third quarterback to win four Super Bowls, which is the most in the franchise.
