Fashion In Reverse

Oxnard High School students reflect on fashion eras and compare it to today’s era

In the world of fashion, modern popular culture considers every decade to be an “era” of specific styles of clothing. They are filled with the trends from seasonal clothing to dazzling accessories and provide an amazing amount of profit for the fashion world.

As we near the end of the 2010’s, people are taking inspiration from past eras and making them trendy once again.

Oxnard High School senior Miranda De La Cruz believes this statement is true. “I see a lot of crop tops that came from the 2000’s, and I think it’s really cool,” she said. Some other trends that our generation is bringing back are bell bottoms, high waisted pants and flared sleeves all from the 1970’s, corduroy and velvet clothing from the 1980’s, along with hoops from the 1990’s.

If she had to choose her favorite fashion era, De La Cruz said it would be the 1970’s and 1990’s. In her words, “They’re completely different and unique, but I think that is why I love them so much.”

To OHS junior Julian Gomez wearing fashion items he likes gives him the confidence to feel powerful. “When you have on a piece of clothing you feel great in, you just feel powerful and like you are on top of the world. No one can take that away from you”.

One can only wonder how people who lived in eras like the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and more felt about fashion. Did they ever believe they would be inspiration for people today?

Fashion from the past plays an important role in influencing styles of today’s era. It is used as a way to keep these trends alive.
