Track and Field: Striving for Greatness

The 2019 Track and Field season is here, and these athletes are excited to see what is in the near future for them. The team had their first league meet on March 6. The meet was held at Oxnard High School against Rio Mesa High School. So far, the yellow jackets have participated in invitationals at Pacifica High and at Ventura High. OHS is already coming out on top with back-to-back meet wins at both invites.

Already members of the track and field team are coming in with record-setting times from the previous season. Last year, sophomore Arissa Thompson broke the record for the 100 meter and the 200 meter dash. Similarly, junior Nevaeh Morales hopes to one day break records of her own. “My personal goal for the season is to be better than I was last year or even better than I was in previous meets. For the 200 meter, this season I’m striving to break out of 28 seconds,” said Morales.

Track and Field is not just a sport where people run, as some may think. There is so much more that comes with the sport as it also has 6 field events such as: the shot put, long jump, high jump, and pole vaulting to name a few. This sport consists of track events that cover distances as short as running 60 meters to 10,000 meters. According to Google the three most popular are the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and 16,00 meters. All events in Track and Field require hard work and dedication. As OHS junior and Track and Field athlete Kayla Judice stated, “Excuses and laziness are for people who don’t want success bad enough, you have to want it yourself!”
